The Truth Of Iraq And How America And Iraq Are Winning The War

Al-Maliki In Surprise Ramadi Visit

March 14th, 2007
(Aljazeera) Nuri al-Maliki, Iraq’s Shia prime minister, has made an unusual and unexpected visit to Ramadi, the Sunni insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad. Al-Maliki flew into the capital of Anbar province aboard a US military helicopter to meet tribal leaders, local government officials and commanders of Iraqi and US security forces. “I haven’t been to Ramadi since 1976,” said al-Maliki. “I love this province and I’m proud that it’s part of Iraq,” he said, after meeting Maamun Sami Rashid, Anbar province governor, in a Saddam-era palace inside a joint US and Iraqi military base.

Al-Maliki and Rashid vowed to work together to combat al-Qaeda insurgents who have been fighting in Anbar since the US-led invasion began in March 2003. Peace move During the prime minister’s visit, Iraqi and US troops patrolled Ramadi’s streets in large numbers and a vehicle curfew was imposed. US commanders said they saw al-Maliki’s trip as a concrete sign that his Shia-led government is serious about making peace with Anbar’s Sunni leaders, many of whom have turned against the insurgency. “It’s very exciting to have the prime minister in Anbar,” said John Allen, US Brigadier General. “It shows that nothing’s impossible.” Al-Maliki’s party held a day of meetings with Anbar leaders and tribal sheikhs, including some of those now fighting al-Qaeda insurgents in the province. Many ordinary Sunnis distrust or oppose Maliki’s Shia-led government, feeding support for a wider Sunni insurgency across Iraq. More US troops The new US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, was also in Ramadi on Tuesday, touring US and Iraqi units. The coalition says Al-Qaeda fighters have taken deep root in Anbar, which stretches west from Baghdad to the borders with Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria. The US military and the Iraqi government have as yet failed to assert their will among the fiercely-independent Sunni tribes living in the province. Additional US troops are deploying in Baghdad and Anbar in support of a new security plan which has already seen the deployment of about 90,000 Iraqi and US soldiers in Baghdad. IraqUpdates

British Troops In Hearts And Minds Campaign In Basra

March 14th, 2007
(Azzaman) By Abed Battat British troops want to win their hearts and minds campaign before leaving the southern city of Basra. And it seems their effort is bearing some fruit. Instead of sending tanks and armored vehicles into the run-down city, they are pouring millions of dollars into development projects. Their latest hearts and minds campaign called Sindbad, after the mythical Basra sailor of the Arabian Nights, has helped local authorities to start and complete 579 development schemes. Basra authorities estimate the Brits to have spent more than $61 million in the past few months to modernize Basra districts and improve the city’s infrastructure. The projects have covered the extension of drinking water pipeline networks currently reaching 7,000 houses. Other development activities included the planting of 7,000 date-palms, the tree symbolizes Basra, and plans are under way to plant 70,000 more. The Brits are keen to revive the city’s once mushrooming date industry and have allocated $12 million for this purposes. These projects have created 21,000 new jobs in a city where unemployment rates are among the highest in the country. IraqUpdates

US Military Claims A Number Of Successes In Iraq

March 14th, 2007

BAGHDAD - US and Iraqi troops pushed on Tuesday with an intensive drive to secure Baghdad as the White House confirmed a possible pullout of US soldiers from Iraq if its “surge” strategy fails. In raids across the embattled country, troops from the two forces killed two militants setting up a roadside bomb, uncovered large caches of weapons and arrested seven people they say are linked to suicide bombing attacks which killed around 120 Shiite pilgrims last week. Violence continued however and police reported one policeman killed and three wounded when gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in the northern city of Kirkuk. The US military is implementing a “surge” of troop reinforcements into Baghdad and neighbouring Anbar province in support of the new security plan called Operation Fardh al-Qanoon (Imposing Law), which has already seen the deployment of about 90,000 Iraqi and US soldiers. US President George W. Bush at the weekend approved another 2,400 soldiers and 2,200 military police, who he said would support the 21,500 extra troops he has already announced. But the White House said on Monday that Pentagon planners are preparing a plan for a phased pullout of US troops from Iraq should the operation fail or be undercut by Congress. White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe cited Defence Secretary Robert Gates saying it would be irresponsible for the United States to not have considered a fallback plan if the escalation in troop levels fails to achieve the goal of quelling violence in the country. “Gates addressed this last week, that it would be negligent not to be thinking about various possible outcomes for the future,” he said. Gates and the US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, “have addressed this repeatedly. We’re focused on the current plan that is just getting started. It will take several months before we are able to assess results,” he said. Petraeus told reporters in Baghdad last week not to expect results “in days or weeks” but that the operation would take months to implement fully. The US military on Tuesday reported a number of successes, including the arrest of seven people on March 11 in a raid on an ice cream factory over suicide bomb attacks on Shiite pilgrims in the central city of Hilla that left around 120 dead. “Acting on a tip, Iraqi army soldiers and paratroopers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division captured the insurgents during a raid of an ice cream factory in the city,” a military statement said. The pilgrims were killed on March 6 when two suicide bombers set off their explosive vests in a crowd of pilgrims walking though Hilla to the shrine city of Karbala to attend the Arbaeen religious ceremony. The US military also reported two “anti-Iraqi forces” killed by rockets fired from US helicopters while they were placing a roadside bomb in the northern city of Mosul. Three men were seen laying the bomb “and covering the tracks of the command wire by smoothing the dirt over top of it,” a military statement said. “Coalition helicopters in position nearby immediately responded and engaged the emplacers with rocket fire.” Two militants were killed and three wounded. Three caches were discovered in villages near Baghdad, which included anti-aircraft rounds, rocket propelled grenades and artillery and mortar rounds. A number of bomb triggering devices such as blasting caps, hand-held radios and washing machine timers were also found. In another raid, in northern Nineveh province, US and Iraqi troops discovered a large cache of weapons, including 19 mortar tubes, 500 small arms rounds, 60 rifle rounds, three rockets and 1,208 anti-aircraft rounds, the military said. Iraqi Shiite Leader Blasts Media for “Great Deal of Defamation”

At the White House yesterday, Iraqi Shiite leader Abdel Aziz Hakim lashed out at the media for bogus reporting…

US President George W. Bush (R) meets with Shiite leader Abdel Aziz Hakim in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC. (AFP) This didn’t make the headlines… But, Iraqi Shiite Leader Abdul-Aziz Al-Hakim had strong words for the defamers yesterday. President Bush Meets with His Eminence Abdul-Aziz Al-Hakim, Leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq
The White House: The Iraqi situation has been subjected to a great deal of defamation, and the true picture is not being presented in order to show a dark side of what’s happening in Iraq.
(See Here, Here, and Here, for starters) We see the attempts to defame and distort the situation in Iraq not taking into consideration the democratic steps that that country has taken, writing the constitution and establishing a state that depends heavily on the constitution, that it is unified and that it is strong. There are attempts to show the sectarian strife in an attempt to weaken the position in Iraq. (See AP) The U.S. interests, the Iraqi interests, the regional interests, they are all linked. Therefore, it is very important when we deal with this issue, we look at the interests of the Iraqi people. If we don’t, this whole issue could backfire and could harm the interests of the region, the United States, and Iraq, as well. Therefore, we believe that the Iraqi issue should be solved by the Iraqis with the help of friends everywhere. But we reject any attempts to have a regional or international role in solving the Iraqi issue. We cannot bypass the political process. Iraq should be in a position to solve Iraqi problems. We welcome any effort that could enhance the democratic reality in Iraq and protect the constitutional role of that state. We have gone a long way to establish a democratic and pluralistic society in Iraq. We have given a great deal of sacrifice to achieving the objective. We cherish all the sacrifices that took place for the liberation and the freedom of Iraq, sacrifices by the Iraqi people, as well as friendly nations, and on top of that list, sacrifices by the America.
